Revolutionising learning through Vertically Integrated Projects

Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs) are long-term, real-world projects that bring together interdisciplinary, multi-level teams of students to work collaboratively with academic staff. These projects offer students the opportunity to make a tangible impact, engage in cutting-edge research, and hone skills prioritised by employers (collaboration, negotiation, creativity).

The University of Bath is breaking new ground through research and applied learning, with the implementation of VIPs. First developed by Professor Ed Coyle at Georgia Tech, VIPs have since been adopted by over 70 higher education institutions worldwide. The University of Bath is the first university in England to develop its own VIP program.

Led by academic directors, VIPs aim to create sustainable, research-focused communities of staff and students. This structure enables experienced students to support their peers while fostering close working relationships with researchers and senior staff.

VIP teams at the University of Bath work proactively on issues related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at global and local community levels.

The University of Bath have a total of nine such projects running in Semester 2 of the 2023-24 academic year, including:

• Carers Centre BANES, who are looking to create a commitment outline to support their carbon management plan, along with recommendations on how to do this.

• Another with Bath & North East Somerset Council (BANES) and the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), looking for ways to conserve water across the region.

• Another project looks to further develop and deliver a sustainable food policy for the University.

By fostering collaboration, VIPs empower students to make a difference, innovate, and develop the skills needed for success in the modern workforce — a win-win scenario for both students and businesses alike.
